"MASTERING THE TOAST WITH A REAL BEER"

Pania Toastmaster's meeting on Thursday was certainly a 'real' Toastmaster's affair with a speech from the Special Occasions Speech Manual 'Mastering The Toast' and a speech entitled "How To Taste a Beer" and we had the opportunity to do so and to judge it on the proper Brewer's judging form!

Sunday 26 October 2014

"PANIA TOASTMASTERS ARE ADAPTABLE"

Thursday's meeting of Pania Toastmasters showed how adaptable the Club needs to be from time to time, one of our speakers was not available at the last minute (due to technical problems) and the other had an unwell child to look after. To cover it was felt that some of the contestants in last weeks Evaluation Contest could profit from some feedback on the contest, hence last minute changes to the scheduled agenda.

Graeme, Toastmaster for the day, posed the following three questions:
"What components do the Judges look for in an Evaluation Contest?"
"What part of the contest did you find the most difficult?"
"What did you learn from the experience?"
These questions generated a lot of discussion from the contestants and audience and it proved to be an interesting and worthwhile experience.

We had a special guest in past member Viv, and apologies were received from Craig,Barbara, David & Carol.

Cheryl replaced her speech with a bard reading, for which she chose readings from William Wordsworth, the first of these was called "Daffodils" which was a tribute to Spring and left us feeling really good, the second part was called "She dwelt among untrodden ways", which was quite the opposite to Daffodils and caught many of us by surprise!
Mike evaluated Cheryl's readings and provided two very good suggestions on how to improve the eye contact and also what to do with her notes, he concluded by praising Cheryl on the pace of her delivery, use of pause and vocal expression. A comprehensive evaluation, well done Mike.

Table Topics with Laurence had a political theme, the problem was 'Labour's Leadership Selection Circus' (Laurence's words not mine!), Ian was asked "should labour look for leaders inside Toastmasters-where leaders are made?" he gave an interesting and well worded reply. Graeme's subject was 'Labour borders on feeling like a 'cult' and he gave a two minute response so obviously either agreed or disagreed strongly! 'Labour's branding needs to change from red-what colour?', Viv chose purple and clarified her reasons well.
'What qualities are important in a leader?', Jen highlighted her answer with sincerity, 'Why should we chose you as a leader?' Jeanette (our newest member) responded very well as if she had anticipated the question, well done!
Wendy evaluated Table Topics and showed her experience by giving each speaker a commendation and a recommendation, thanks Wendy, your thoughts are very much appreciated.

General Evaluator, Darryl, continues to go from strength to strength, although relatively 'new' to evaluation he always provides well reasoned observations that all of us can find beneficial.Today's meeting was somewhat different to usual so thanks Darryl for taking on the challenge and handling it so well.
Ian gave he timekeeper's report and spoke of difficulty in not knowing when the lights should be used, with so many changes to the program as opposed to set speeches, I am sure that Toastmaster Graeme will learn from Ian's comments.

A very good meeting, lively and interesting, thanks to everyone!

Best Table Topics went to Jeanette.

See you all next week when hopefully we will be back to some type of normality in the meeting!

A special thanks to Graeme for the meeting report.

This was the title given to one of the two Bards presented at Thursday's meeting of Pania Toastmasters. Mike was the presenter under the guidance of Toastmaster of the day Laurence, who presented an enlightening programme in that his theme was all about the dangers of "electricity", the agenda presented 'sparked' plenty of interest with delightful pictures on the theme and some 'current' points of interest.Well done Laurence, also for keeping the programme to time.

"TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE"

This was the intriguing title that was associated with Darryl's presentation at Pania Toasmaster's meeting on 25th September under the control of the Toastmaster of the day, Mike.

Friday 29 August 2014

"OH THE PLACES YOU'LL GO"

This was the book title chosen by Carol with her bard reading at Thursday's meeting of Pania Toastmasters, for those that may have heard of this title before it's probably because the writer was none other than the very popular Dr. Seuss, well chosen Carol.

Thursday 21 August 2014

" A LITTLE OUT OF THE ORDINARY!"

Thursday's meeting at Pania was a little different to our usual exciting meetings, it was still exciting and educational, but we did not have any prepared speeches as the Area Governor was carrying out his official visit and we had a very interesting bard reading from David, together with an invigorting Table Topics session on party politics.

Monday 18 August 2014

"SCOTLAND'S DAY OF DESTINY"

Saturday 2 August 2014

"MY FATHERS RUNNING WITH A DEAD BOY!"

This was the title of Darryl's 'Tell A Story' assignment at Thursday's meeting of Pania Toastmasters and it certainly grabbed attention right from the start.
Carol, was Toastmaster for the day and she opened the meeting in a bright a breezy fashion, highlighting her theme 'Catch up with Cazza' radio show following on from last week's Table Topics theme.

Thursday 24 July 2014

"PROLOGUE" to 'THOSE WERE THE DAYS"

On a mild Thursday afternoon 24th July, 11 Pania Toastmasters gathered for their weekly meeting under the guidance of Toastmaster Laurence who had a clear and concise programme and ran the meeting efficiently starting and finishing on time! Highlites were the Bard reading by Mike of Dylan Thomas's poem "Prologue" and a speech by Graeme entitled "Those Were the Days".Not forgetting Table Topics, and one could not sleep through that!!

The meeting opened with Craig introducing Mike, who was doing a 'non-manual' assignment although it could have fitted into the,  Interpretive Reading Manual, Reading Poetry."Prologue" by Dylan Thomas was Mike's choice, and he informed us that Dylan Thomas is a favorite of his although in some of his work it is difficult to work out what his meaning is! However, Mike presented the material extremely well with great vocal variety, enunciation and tremendous ability to not slip up over any of the great many words (and not all of them easy to pronounce ) that Thomas put into this work. Not sure at the end if any of us (including Mike) knew exactly what Thomas was trying to convey, but the use of words and phrases is excellent in this work and Mike achieved a very high standard in sharing them with us. Great work Mike!
In his Evaluation, Craig rightly gave Mike plenty of praise and was able to add a couple of suggestion for improvement.

Next up was Graeme, introduced by Darryl, he was doing  the  Vocal Variety assignment from the Competent Communicator Manual entitled "Those Were The Days!" Graeme used his imagination and took us back to his childhood (not so long ago!) in Bluff and told us about the huge dragons that he found living under Bluff and that had a network of acquaintances up and down the country (rumour has it that they caused the Christchurch earthquakes when they were moving underground!), Graeme used great Vocal Variety (and an extremely vivid imagination) in this presentation and Darryl gave him due credit for this in his evaluation, which was very comprehensive and included three suggestions for improvement (not always easy for a speaker of Graeme's experience). Perhaps Darryl needs to watch the timing of his Evaluations!

Table Topics followed and Carol was 'in charge'.She was a DJ on the Radio and the Table Topic speakers had to comment on the subject of the day "snoring". The first 'expert' up was Dr.Mike, "why, how, when do we snore" he suggested a nose realignment (does not always work) and in the end a bucket of ice cold water! Dr Noel was next up," how to stop snoring" operations are not always successful , drastics measures are often required and at the end of the day just stop them sleeping!
Wendy, was a caller on the line who lives with a chronic snorer, how does she manage, turns out he is a shift worker and when he sleeps during the day the walls move in and out and the ornaments shake like an earthquake- no solution was available but good luck with the future! Next up was Craig, apparently lives with a chronic snorer as well but  being hard of hearing and wearing hearing aids-just takes them out at night and does not have a problem! Who said being partially deaf can be a nuisance!!
Great effort by all the speakers and by Carol with the questions- does she have a problem???

General Evaluator, Wendy then summarised the meeting with good comments for the speakers and especially the Evaluators and all who took part, she was assisted by the Timekeeper, Barbara, who kept us all(mostly) to time and we finished on time anyway!

Best Speaker; Mike
Best Evaluator; Darryl
Best Table Topic; Craig

Again next week we meet, Toastmaster is Carol, turn up and make it a another great meeting.

Friday 18 July 2014

"ALL IS NOT LOST"

11 members attended Pania Toastmaster's meeting on 26th June and enjoyed a varied and interesting programme, chaired as Toastmaster of the day by Graeme. Graeme's programme was clear and concise which commenced on time and ended similarly, the one speech was presented by Craig and titled "All is Lost or All is Not Lost!"

Friday 20 June 2014

"IT'S ALL GOING SWIMMINGLY with EEZY PEEZY PIKELETS!"

The two speeches given yesterday at Pania's meeting went along the the subject above and we got to taste the results of one of them!!
But first congratulations to Wendy, our Toastmaster of the day, on the preparation and thought put into the programme. Not only was the agenda a visual masterpiece( typical of Wendy's efforts in this regard) but she also had a Winter Solstice theme along with details about Matariki (Maori New Year). Well done, Wendy always a top effort!
Our first speaker, Carol, was introduced by Jen who gave the objectives of Project Five 'Your Body Speaks'. This is all about gestures, facial expression and eye contact. Carol spoke of her love of swimming and this gave her ample opportunity to explore and utilise body language and this she did very, very well. Freestyle,Breaststroke,Backstroke,Butterfly, Side Stroke,Dog Paddle were given due attention as was synchronized swimming. You sue had the right moves which made subject choice great.
In her evaluation, Jen gave her praise on achieving the  speech objectives, beautiful word pictures and natural body language. Jen's suggestion for improvement was that she could have dressed for the part!! (mid winter-even in the Hawkes Bay- I don't think so!)

Darryl introduced our next speaker, Barbara with her "Selling a Product" speech from Speciality Speeches manual with the interesting title of " Eezy Peezy Pikelets". I was impressed with Barbara's preparation , cooking is not easy but Barbara took it to another level and offering samples to all the audience was an absolute winner. "Yummy!". What stood out was Barbara's ability to keep the conversation flowing from beginning to end and 12 minutes is a long time particularly while cooking.
Darryl congratulated Barbara on her efforts,-achieved the objectives, kept our interest, explained the steps taken, challenged us, gave background as to when it all started and the use of word pictures. He suggested the the table used for cooking be moved closer to the audience and to show the contents of the bowl after either stirring or adding ingredients.

Table topics were next and introduced by Mike, he told us that he would start a sentence and it was up to the speaker to finish it! Laurence had "there were six eggs in the nest", he did very well linking it to the eggs Barbara used in her speech- well done!
Ian "I took a short cut through the fence and came face to face with a cow", responded well drawing on years of experience and concluded by saying "it's just as well it was not a bull!"
Graeme " I was completely submerged and found that" Graeme never really answered the question allowing distractions to interfere with his thinking.
Jen, "it was completely dark and smelly" she showed plenty of imagination along with excellent humour.

General Evaluator, Laurence, provided a very good summary of the whole meeting. Wendy was rightly praised for a well run meeting, using Matariki and standing up to make announcements. Laurence also provided feedback for both Evaluators. Thank you Laurence , your comments are always appreciated.

Best Speaker; Barbara
Best Evaluator; Darryl
Best Table Topic; Laurence.

Another excellent meeting, thank you everyone for participating and helping one another, let's do it all agian next Thursday when the Toastmaster is Graeme.

Thank you Graeme for the report.

Wednesday 11 June 2014

"'TO BE OR NOT TO BE A CHILD OF AFRICA"

That could have been the question at today's meeting of Pania Toastmasters, attended by 13 members who enjoyed a Football World Cup prelude as a theme meeting run by the Toastmaster of the day, Craig, whose agenda was cased in Football players 'speak' and adorned with soccer transfers.

Monday 9 June 2014

'LIFE AFTER WINDOWS XP"

The Title of David's speech today at Pania's meeting overseen by Darryl our Toastmaster of the day, who welcomed us all. A small but vocal turnout and a great meeting was to follow.A standout feature of today's meeting was the Agenda, extremely well set out and in colour, with visuals of various computers through the ages. This was excellent work Darryl and it also tied in very nicely with David's Speech.

Thursday 29 May 2014

"LOOKING IN THE MIRROR"

Cheryl, was our Toastmaster of the day at Pania's meeting today and what a great job she did, excellent programme, coped with a couple of late changes had a Queens Birthday theme and we could have finished on time! (it was not her fault or the Timekeepers that we did not!). It was Cheryl's first time as Toastmaster-but you would not have known it! What a marvelous speech we had from Carol as well- looking in the mirror can tell you a great deal about history!!!

Thursday 22 May 2014

"GIVE ME A FAIR MARKET VALUE & WE WILL GO TO THE MOON!!!"

These interesting titles were the subject of our two speeches at Pania Toastmaster's meeting on 22nd May.Our Toastmaster of the day, Barbara, started the meeting by introducing what was happening on our programme, a nice touch and quite informative, especially for our guest, Alistair.

Thursday 15 May 2014

"MILK and MISCHIEF"

That was the intriguing title from Jen's Storytelling assignment today at Pania's meeting. This was her second project from the "Let's Get Personal" Manual and what a story!, talk about chaos!!. The story was all about a nine week boat trip from Glasgow to Wellington that she made many years ago with her brother ,Trevor. The activities that they got up to were quite a revelation and the story almost fell into the category of 'believe it or not!'

Wednesday 7 May 2014

"GET A GRIP AND CLEAN THE FLOOR!"

An unusual title but a very interesting presentation by Cheryl today, at Pania's meeting attended by 10 members and a guest. The meeting was well controlled by Toastmaster Ian, who explained what we were doing for the benefit of our guest, Alistair, and kept the meeting well to time.

Wednesday 16 April 2014

"This Was Their Finest Hour"

What a rousing rendition of a shorten version of Winston Churchill's great speech to the Houses of Parliament on 18th June 1940, shortly after he became Prime Minister was given today by Mike in the assignment "Oratorical Speech" from the Interpretive Reading Manual "This Was Their Finest Hour"' Mike had the voice and actions to bring the speech to life and he certainly achieved that.

"LOVE LANGUAGE" so did "BEATRICES GOAT"

Those were the names given to our two speeches at Pania's meeting on Thursday 10th April (Wahine Day 1967!) The first was all about "Beatrice's Goat" a reading from the StoryTelling Manual 'A Folk Tale' from Jen. While "Love Language" was presented by Carol from Project Two in the Competent Communicator Manual 'Organise Your Speech. The meeting ran well under the guidance of Toastmaster David.

Monday 7 April 2014

"WALKING, WALKING, WALKING can be 'A PAIN IN THE PROVERBIAL!"

Well on a lovely autumn day on Thursday 3rd April Pania members heard two great speeches which 'tired and painful'. No!  it was not the speeches themselves that caused that, but the thought of the excellent topics chosen!

Our Toastmaster was Wendy and once again she produced one of her magnificently coloured programmes with an Autumnal theme and ran the meeting with her usual flair and style. The meeting commenced with Mike introducing Darryl with his speech entitled "Walking, Walking, Walking" and he did a fair bit of it! 100kms to be precise as a party of four, raising money for a Oxfam. Darryl told us in a very interesting fashion about his 100kms walk around the Taupo area (which took 30 hours) and some of the highs/lows on the way. Excellent voice volume and pace (remember he was only walking!) and humour added to an all round great presentation. The four in his group(including his wife) ended up the walk dressed as 'The Craggy Island Crew' from the TV show Father Brown, no doubt a sight to behold! Mike had some good commendations for him and a couple of really worthwhile suggestions for improvement.

Second up was Cheryl, introduced by Ian, with a 'Research Your Topic' assignment entitled "A pain in the Proverbial". Cheryl did extremely well in telling us all about  Osteo-arthritis , no notes, excellent pace, good clear and understandable facts and what we can all do to lessen the chances of suffering, one in six will suffer and for us older ones over 60, 50% of us will suffer. Well done Cheryl a very well presented assignment and a n excellent finish. Ian gave Cheryl due praise for her efforts and a had a couple of useful suggestions.

Table Topics followed with TT Master Carol. What a master she turned out to be with some excellent topics where members were requested to finish a sentence i.e. David 'People don't believe when ...' and he chose stop drinking! Talking about his home brewing (which he does just to see the result and hear the brew bubbling away-YEAH RIGHT!!) well answered David with enthusiasm and humour. Graeme 'back in my day when ....' people showed respect for others. Good answer to the question!! got right into the topic, great gestures and recounted a recent experience.
Barbara was next ' The last time I really belly-laughed ...' some filling in while the thought processes commenced but then an excellent story well told and very humorous-even some belly laughter!, Cheryl had 'I just couldn't believe it the other day when .."  and spoke about her funny boss and some of the hyjinx they get up to, again humorous and interesting. Darryl then told us about 'when I woke up in the middle of the night recently .....' he was dreaming about Jen!!!. enough said -I think!!!
Jen gave some feed back for Carol (as TT Evaluator) and had good comments for all the speakers with lots of laughter included- Great session all round.

Craig gave us a hurried General Evaluation, with some suggestions for those on the program and was assisted by Time Keeper David who almost kept us to time!

Best Evaluator; Mike.
Best Table Topics; David
Best Speaker;(a tricky one!) Cheryl.

Well done to all who participated (that was everyone there) we do it again next week 10th April (Wahine Day).

Wednesday 26 March 2014

Chopsticks, redundancy and curmudgeons

There is that saying about walking a mile on someone else’s shoes … I now have an appreciation of the effort required in writing these interesting meeting reports.  With the two main blog posters away I was asked to report on todays meeting.

Some late changes and a smaller than usual turnout resulted in a busy meeting with all those attending being involved - in some cases performing more than one role.

Darryl started the meeting with the Grammarians introduction.  He presented his word of the day - “Unique” - explaining that there are no ‘degrees’ of uniqueness, it is an absolute.  So something cannot be 'the most unique’ or ‘very unique’ … it is simply ‘unique’.

For a change, and to let those that were assigned new roles time to prepare, the meeting started with Table Topics.  This was led by David who covered those “White Elephants” of the region and what could be done with them.  Carol spoke will about the Art Deco buses though was actually unfamiliar with them, suggesting some other heritage purpose would be appropriate.  Mike turned the tables and defended the Napier-Gisborne rail line as it helped get trucks off the road.  Ian provided a creative solution for the Marineland pool as a location for household rubbish.  Finally Darryl, disagreed about the”white elephant” status of the MTG museum and suggested it was good for the community to have such assets.

Our first speech was from Russell who provided an entertaining and educational talk on the history, etiquette, cultural significance and - most importantly - how to use … chopsticks.  Not only was his talk humorous but I think we all were inspired to give chopsticks ‘another go’ next time we were at a Chinese restaurant.  Later in the meeting David evaluated Russell’s speech, providing positive feedback and some suggestions for improvement - including having a model demonstrate using the chopsticks while Russell explains.

Second up was Jane whose speech definitely changed the mood.  Her speech was for the project “Delivering bad news”.  As a result we - as employees of her company - were told of the downsizing about to happen and the closing of the Napier office.  We were all to be made redundant but were offered time to look for a new job as well as a redundancy package.  Jane presented the news well, providing hope where appropriate but made it clear that it was bad news we were hearing.  Ian evaluated the speech providing some good suggestions and suggesting it brought to a conclusion our virtual employment with Janes company which has been the case over her last few speeches.

Darryl returned to the stage to provide his Grammarians report.  He noted a number of interesting words used - “curmudgeon”, “spittle”, “ablutions”; turns of phrase - “thinking on my feet”; some great “R” alliteration from Mike, and Ian dropping “ex cathedra” into his evaluation - well done!

Carol provided the time keepers report - not an easy feat with so many changes.

And with time running out, Noel gave his General Evaluation.  He provided useful feedback to all those who hadn’t been evaluated as yet - as a result some people got two or three evaluations in this meeting.  Again Noel was generous in his praise and succinct in his suggestions for improvement.  Best Table Topics was Darryl; Best Speech was Russell; and Best Evaluation was David.

Finally, well done to Barbara for managing the changes to the program with such skill and in such a relaxed manner.

"PEACE ANGELS -BOUNTY HUNTER"

Sounds like two opposing views, doesn't it? Well- they were- these were the titles of the two speeches on Thursday 13th March's meeting of Pania Toastmasters. The first a reading and the second a speech which made for a diversified meeting.

Thursday 6 March 2014

INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST- results

On Thursday20th February, Pania Toastmaster's members were entertained by five members who took up the challenge and entered the 2014 International Speech Contest, the winner of which could well earn themselves a trip to Kuala Lumpur in August to represent District 72 (NZ) in the "World Championship of Public Speaking" at the Toastmaster's International Convention!

"RINGING THE CHANGES"

CHANGES were certainly well discussed at Pania's meeting on 6th March with both speakers, Jane & Russell  using this medium to discuss changes. One being the Communication of Change and the other covering changes to the House Insurance types.12 members attended the excellent meeting well chaired by Toastmaster Graeme.

Thursday 13 February 2014

"APPRAISE WITH PRAISE"

"Appraise with praise" from the Speeches by Management series was the direction taken by Jane at yesterday's meeting of Pania Toastmasters Club. Jane had 'George' alias Russell being a role model to emphasis the point. It certainly helped to reinforce the message. Well done Jane and let's not forget 'George'.
