An unusual title but a very interesting presentation by Cheryl today, at Pania's meeting attended by 10 members and a guest. The meeting was well controlled by Toastmaster Ian, who explained what we were doing for the benefit of our guest, Alistair, and kept the meeting well to time.
Reading of the Mission Statement was followed by the acceptance of apologies, while the General Evaluator, Graeme, explained his role. We then went straight into Cheryl's presentation, introduced by Wendy. The assignment was 'Get comfortable with visual aids' and Cheryl certainly had plenty to get comfortable with and show us about. Cheryl had arrived at the meeting with a vacuum cleaner, a broom and a mat, and in her assignment told us about the discovery of the vacuum cleaner and its progress to today's lightweight, small and effective models. An excellent demonstration of using visual aids together with some very good gestures and interesting facts. She even brought her own dirt, spread on her mat, to show us the effectiveness of today's vacuum cleaners, particularly her little toy!As she explained everyone has a floor, so we are all effected by the humble vacuum cleaner.Did you know that prior to the vacuum cleaner, cleaning was done with an article called a broom (we still have them today!) and it was called a broom because it was made from the broom bush!
Wendy; evaluation included many commendations about the excellent use of the visual aids and had a couple of useful suggestions for Cheryl, like slowing down a little and utilising more pauses (Cheryl was so enthusiastic about her toy) and also keeping eye contact with the audience while talking. Well done to both speaker and evaluator.
The Table topics session was conducted by Graeme and the theme was "first time", Darryl had to tell us about his first car, he was 25 before he sat his driver's licence and his pride and joy was a 2nd hand, blue Honda Civic- good answer Darryl and concluded well. Mike had "his first driving ticket" he then tried to convince us by fibbing his way through a scenario where he ran into another car on the Hutt Motorway, which ran into another car etc, that he actually had never had a driving ticket!! Tui add comes to mind!
Next up Jen had "first visit to the dentist" Mrs Cook was her name, school dental clinic, and she had some us us feeling the pain again after all these years with a graphic and painful example of her first visit. Excellent 1 minute speech Jen, which enabled her to be selected "The best Table Topic".
Craig, gave us a rundown on the Officers roles, with the election of officers for the next 12 months coming up on 29th May. The Club does not run itself and members are asked to step up and put a little back into the organisation by being a Club Officer, not an onerous role but an important one- ARE YOU PREPARED TO ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE??? any member can do it.
Graeme wound the meeting up with a general Evaluation assisted by David with Table Topics evaluation, this commended the humour used by the speakers and the fact that one speaker was' honest about being a liar!'
Graeme commended Ian on a well run meeting and keeping to time (despite some interjections!) and Barbara gave us her Timekeeper's report which showed that some had exceeded their allotted time, but as mentioned we still finished right on time!
See you all next week when we do it all again, by then we will know who will represent NZ at the "World Championship of Public Speaking"
