These interesting titles were the subject of our two speeches at Pania Toastmaster's meeting on 22nd May.Our Toastmaster of the day, Barbara, started the meeting by introducing what was happening on our programme, a nice touch and quite informative, especially for our guest, Alistair.
David presented the Club's mission statement and apologies were accepted from Sue,Jen,Craig and Noel.David also introduced the first speaker Laurence. His speech was titled "A Fair Market Value" from the Speaking to Inform manual relating to the "Abstract Concept". a interesting assignment that was all about the different methods, processes used to determine price yield when applied to houses. Laurence was very knowledgeable with regard to the topic and produced some facts and figures that gave substance to his presentation. Well done Laurence!
David's evaluation of Laurence's presentation included praise for choosing such a great subject, the labels that gave emphasis and the enthusiasm shown during the presentation. He suggested that maybe Laurence had squeezed a little too much into the topic so trimming it would have helped. Good advice , David.
Wendy introduced Darryl with tittle-tattle about his interest in astronomy along with the objectives from the Interpretive reading manual and in particular that from Project Five "The Oratorical Speech". Darryl's reading entitled "We will go to the Moon" was John F Kennedy's address relating to America going to the moon. He spent a moment or two giving background as to why it was so important, which was a nice lead in to his actual reading. A challenging assignment in that Darryl was having to use words and nuances that were not part of his normal vocabulary - it was obvious that a lot of practice had gone into the assignment. An excellent effort Darryl!
Wendy's evaluation saw Darryl's speech as informative and inspirational- delivered with passion. Not only was it read well but excellent speech rate and with very good eye contact. Wendy did suggest that a little more use of pause between blocks of information would have helped, good feedback, Wendy.
Graeme introduced Table Topics and had a tourist type theme, he asked the speakers to choose a number between 1 and 6, so it was pot-luck what question you got!
Carol's subject was 'tell us what you know about boat cruises' she responded well with personal experience giving some idea what boat life was like. Wendy 'how do you spend time relaxing?', obviously a very busy person with very little spare time but did manage to come up with 3/4 ideas.Ian 'what are your thoughts regarding the City's Art Deco buses?' humour was quickly used to good effect and rounded his thoughts off very nicely.Barbara 'cruise liners currently pay $43K to berth at Napier, this is going up to $55K-what do you think?' " I don't give a hoot " was the first response and gave us insight into how to sail to Fiji and back for nothing!
General Business followed, with next week's programme covered and Mike was presented with his "Spirit Of Success' certificate for completing 5 speeches from an Advanced Manual, and is now ell on his way to a Competent Communicator Gold award!!
Mike was also General Evaluator and provided feedback to those taking part in Table Topics with a good balance of Commend/Recommend to everyone. He also gave praise to Barbara for a very good meeting and keeping to time, good feedback to both David and Wendy the Speech evaluators as well.
Timekeeper Ian, gave detail necessary to remind us all how important it is for this Club with only 50 minutes at our disposal to keep to time.
Best Speaker; Darryl
