Pania Toastmaster's meeting on Thursday was certainly a 'real' Toastmaster's affair with a speech from the Special Occasions Speech Manual 'Mastering The Toast' and a speech entitled "How To Taste a Beer" and we had the opportunity to do so and to judge it on the proper Brewer's judging form!
Our Toastmaster of the day was Barbara, and she ran a n excellent program for the 10 members present and a guest Bronson. We even had time for a grammarian, Craig, who chose the well known saying (and very true saying) from our founder Dr. Ralph Smedley "That we learn best in moments of enjoyment" for members to use during their speaking engagements, two managed to include it and the rest, well they just did it! The first speech was presented by Jen, introduced by Noel, this was the Mastering of the Toast speech entitled "Man of the Year". All the men in the audience thought it was going to be about them, but apparently we all have a lot to live up to with Jen's fictitious man being toasted, all the details of whom are on "jojoblog" An excellent and interesting 'toast' Jen which you had given a lot of thought to- well done!
Noel evaluated Jen's toast and praised her for many things, with an excellent suggestion about the speedy pace of the delivery, (the finish came very quickly ,according to Noel, which really meant Jen needed to slow down a bit!)
Table Topics were next, presented by Darryl, who selected items currently in the news and attempted to guide the questions towards those he thought would know something about their subject! Mike had 'the increase in the speed limit to 110kms per hour' (110mph was mentioned but this was a slip of the tnogue!!) confident and sensible answer by Mike who thought it could be a good idea, especially for him. Craig had to justify spending an estimated $25m to replace our flag, and while perhaps he did not justify the cost-he felt strongly that it should be replace (but not with a black flag).
Laurence had 'people that work from home don't work' and agreed entirely that there were far too many distractions for much to get done. Jen answered "should we be doing more at our borders to prevent Ebola appearing here?' and felt that we are already doing enough, enough was perfectly adequate as in her words you would need "two buckets full of infection" for it to be a problem!
Cheryl told us all about the advantages of the new "green coke" going into production sweetened by a natural sweetner stevia, but green coke (well it is in a green can anyway). Very impressed with Cheryl's knowledge of stevia!. Good answers by most! and great questions Darryl, Graeme gave a very quick evaluation of Table Topics as time was agin us!
Then followed David's presentation "How to Taste A Beer" and we did! An excellent presentation with some interesting facts and quotes included and off course the tasting. Not of one of David's own brews but a very palatable pillsenger lager which we then marked on "the official brewer's" judging form- it did not quite make a 'gold' but scored a high 'silver'. Laurence had many commendations for David (and rightly so) and his enthusiasm and knowledge showed through according to Laurence. He was also able to find three worthwhile suggestions for David, to improve the speech even further. Extremely well done to both the speaker and the evaluator.Remember to "think what we drink, rather than sink that drink!"
The General Evaluator, Mike, did not have much time to comment on the meeting but felt it went well and that "we learn't through moments of enjoyment", timekeeper (standin) Ian gave us a run down of the times and why we were slightly overtime while during the business session certificates for the Evaluation Contest were distributed and Graeme asked members to assist Ian next week as both he, Laurence and Craig will be away at Convention.
Best Speaker; David
Best Evaluator; Laurence
Best Table Topic; Jen.
Well done to everyone and hope to see Bronson back next week, no volunteers for a report next week with Graeme and Craig away so NO report!!!
