This was the title of Darryl's 'Tell A Story' assignment at Thursday's meeting of Pania Toastmasters and it certainly grabbed attention right from the start.
Carol, was Toastmaster for the day and she opened the meeting in a bright a breezy fashion, highlighting her theme 'Catch up with Cazza' radio show following on from last week's Table Topics theme.
The day's agenda reflected the theme in a very colourful manner and it was obvious that we were in for a good time, thanks for the effort Carol.
Wendy introduced Darryl by giving personal background information along with the speech objectives. It was a Tell a Story assignment from the Interpretive Reading Manual titled as above. Written by Carl Nixon, Darryl captured the essence of the story particularly well and the topic allowed him to maximise the moment with characterisation, vocal variety, imagery and descriptive language from beginning to end.
The storyline revolved around a man and a ten year old boy being buried under the sand and the frantic efforts made to rescue them. Emotive and meaningful, excellent choice of reading. Thanks for breathing 'life' into your project Darryl.
Wendy gave a very thorough evaluation, and it was obvious that she appreciated Darryl's efforts. I liked how Wendy picked out aspects such as eye contact, characterisation, enunciation, speech rate and also how well the reading was introduced. She suggested that Darryl use pause between blocks of information, which was very perceptive. Well worthwhile- thank you Wendy.
Next up was Barbara, introduced by Noel, who gave good details of her 'Story Telling' project "The Moral of the Story" with the objectives outlined and the title given "That's a Good Idea".
Barbara started by saying that this was an "absolutely true story" and the more her story progressed the more I understood why she had said it. This was one of those stories that made one ask "surely this can not get any worse?" The story was told in such a delightful way and so true to life. Basically Barbara's husband got locked in the bathroom (a problem with the lock on the door) and the efforts that were made to get him out, all of this while Barbara was trying to watch a Silver Ferns/Australia Netball game. Congratulations (and who won the netball?)
Noel gave a lot of praise (understandably) in his evaluation as well as repeating the speech objectives. His commendations included great story, well delivered, family orientated and good vocals. His recommendation related to putting more emphasis on the 'twist' factor asked for under the speech objectives. Thanks for your input Noel.
Laurence chose a Convention theme for his Table Topics, Viv (past member and guest) was asked to respond to "arriving at the hotel to find her room being a long way from the actual convention" she responded "issuing an ultimatum especially with her having a broken ankle" (sounds a bit like a true story!). David "found someone sleeping in his room", he chose to be 'Mr Nice Guy' which gave everyone 'warm fuzzies'. Jen was "allowed 15 mins for morning tea and found herself in the 30 minute queue". Her answer clearly showed she had considered this issue and may have had some personal experience! Well done Jen.
Mike "found his bed too short" and went to 'some lengths' giving an explanation. Ian evaluated Table Topics by providing feedback for everyone and also awarded the best Table Topics speaker of the day.
Timekeeper, Mike gave a very positive response with regard to his role and the General Evaluator, Graeme had 30 seconds !! to give his report which was the only 'blemish' to a very well run meeting by Carol (her first time).
A most enjoyable meeting which everyone appreciated so let's hope that we have a good response to our "bring a Guest' meeting next week 7th August at 12.00.
Best Speaker; Barbara
Best Evaluator; Noel
Best Table Topics; David
Thanks Graeme for the report.
