These were the titles given by out two speakers at Pania's meeting on 27th February.14 members enjoyed "Night Train" written by W H Auden as part of Darryl's poetry presentation .
David (his Evaluator) was very encouraging when introducing Darryl as part of his evaluation and the feedback highlighted key points such as Vocal Variety, use of pause and clarity of voice. Luckily David remembered to give the speech objectives, which helped those present to understand and appreciate how good Darryl's presentation really was!
Cheryl was our second prepared speaker and gave her Project Six, from the Competent Communicator Manual (Vocal Variety), the speech was all about going to Hawaii and was given with great enthusiasm, she truly relived the moment! Graeme introduced Cheryl, outlining the objectives of the assignment as well as giving her encouragement. Graeme's feedback included praising her for placing emphasis on individual words, voice projection, varying the pace and overall expression. Suggestions came in the form of utilising visuals and trying not to move about too much.
Both speeches were of a high standard.
Wendy was our Toastmaster and started with a friendly greeting, followed by going through the programme and what a programme it was! We do always look forward to Wendy's programmes and today was no exception- well done Wendy for an excellent "Art Deco" programme with plenty of colour and pictures.
The meeting kept to time, Cheryl read the "Mission Statement of a Club", Jane presented the Grammarian's word "avaricious", General Business was presented and on to Table Topics.
Russell was the Topic's Master and chose Transport as today's theme. 'Should the City Council Finance the Railway Line to Gisborne?' Laurence was asked, he basically said no and built on that opinion. 'Should Napier Airport become International?' Darryl hoped that it might happen (being a regular traveller) but added that it was not really feasible and gave reasons. 'Should Napier Port be upgraded to take Bigger Ships?', Ian felt that it was already like that, adding that the port was very busy with "container ships of people".Should a good rail passenger service be instigated to Wellington?' Jane responded with a very thought provoking answer saying she supported the idea 100%.
Jen was the Table Topics evaluator and gave good feedback with both praise and suggestions for each speaker following which General Evaluator Noel gave an excellent overview of the meeting. What I particularly liked was Noel's helpful tips for those taking part, such as keeping one's own experiences out of evaluation, giving speech objectives when introducing a speaker and making sure that those not on the programme (or with a lesser role i.e. not a speaker etc) are first to be asked when we have Table Topics. This is important to ensure that where possible very member attending gets an opportunity to speak.
The standout feature was not only what Noel said, but the way that he said it.
Timekeeper was Carol, and she gave her first Timekeeper's report, which clearly showed that she had been listening. Thank you Carol.
Grammarian Jane, gave Laurence credit form using the word of the day twice and congratulated everyone for making her job so much easier with the excellent grammar used, she also mentioned some of the phrases that caught her attention.
A well attended meeting that finished on time.
