On Thursday20th February, Pania Toastmaster's members were entertained by five members who took up the challenge and entered the 2014 International Speech Contest, the winner of which could well earn themselves a trip to Kuala Lumpur in August to represent District 72 (NZ) in the "World Championship of Public Speaking" at the Toastmaster's International Convention!
The first speaker was Laurence "Planning Ahead"- Laurence unfortunately did not 'walk the talk', and gave a rather impromptu, but entertaining and interesting speech about just that 'planning ahead'. Suggestions of a diary , religiously kept and cutting down on unproductive time-TV, Food!! etc came through. A good effort Laurence.
Next up was David, whose subject was coincidentally almost the same as Laurence's, but David had planned ahead and was prepared. David spoke about the 80/20 principle in which 80% of most things we do are unnecessary while 20% are important, so lets concentrate ion the 20%, "life is short' so focus on the 20% and achieve a great deal more in the time left! Well done David, in that you were not thrown by Laurence's effort and were able to utilise some of his material for your own use.
Jane was next up with a speech about "Weightwatchers", Jane gave us the history of this worthwhile organisation and some of the ideas to keep slimmer (if you require to!). A well organised and presented speech with interest for us all in watching our diets.
Russell followed on with a very intriguing speech entitled "Cliché Tennis". This was adapted by Russell from a game show on TV, where well known people were pitched against one another in a game of volleying backward and forward cliches about each other, Russell adapted it to tennis and it was very well done and extremely entertaining. Well done Russell!
Last but by no means least we had a speech from Barbara ""All you need is love" no she did not sing the well known' Beatles' number, but told a very well put together story about her parents (married on 4th April 1940) and the values that they instilled in her and her two sisters. Five words covered these, SUPPORT-PRIDE-COURAGE-WISDOM and CELEBRATE all produced on separate red hearts and the speech was rapped up with another five words that encompass all of the above 'all you need is love' or if you wish 'love is all you need'! An excellent presentation delivered in Barbara's usual excellent manner.
The Contest was Chaired by Craig and the three Judges came to their decision by placing;
3rd; Jane : 2nd Russell ; and 1st; Barbara, who will now go on to represent Pania at the Area Contest against the five other Clubs in our Area on 28th March in Hastings.
Get along to support her as she also represents us in the Evaluation Contest on the same night.
There was one disqualification in the Contest due to a time fault!
The meeting concluded after General Business , which included the presentation to Jen of her Competent Communicator Award-Congratulations Jen! and the induction of Carol Reid into Pania Club, welcome Carol, we look forward to your IceBreaker!
Craig reminded us about Club Leadership Training on Friday 28th February 6.30pm at the Greenmeadows Community Centre, in Tait Drive, and that subs will be due next month $90 reduced to $75 if paid by 20th March.
That's all for this week- a normal meeting this Thursday 27th-Toastmaster-Wendy- BE THERE!
