That was the topic for Pania Toastmasters Table Topic's Contest held at today's meeting and presided over by Chairman Craig, 10 members attended and all those not Judging or Sgt-at-arms entered the Contest so that was six members. Judges were Wendy, Graeme and Craig with Ian as Sgt-at-arms.
First speaker was Laurence, who entertained us with a talk about when he won his first Club Speech Contest, and for a confirmed stutterer this was no mean achievement, he then went on tio win the Area Contest- great achievement Laurence and well put across.
Next up was Jen, Jen has had an extremely interesting and well traveled life, living in many different countries around the world and shared with us an achievement of teaching their gardener in Zimbabwe many new skills and shared a very humorous (perhaps not at the time!) story about him.He subsequently went on to be the Gardener for The NZ High Commissioner. Well told Jen and a great achievement to be proud of.
Carol followed and she told us about her two lovely daughters, how extroverted they are (must take after their mother!) and how happy and proud they make her. Well told Carol, but try a little more life in your presentation next time (not like you at all and perhaps you were overcome by it being a contest?)
David was next up and he extolled us with an excellent yarn about his achievement but in a very soft voice-speak up David so we can all hear you.
Mike, we had no trouble hearing as he told us about the achievement of playing a saxophone alone and then after much practice having to fit in with a band- as he said you can hold notes as long as you like alone but when in a band you have to keep 'in tune' with the other members. Well done Mike, perhaps we can have a tune sometime-Louis Armstrong the 2nd!!
Last but not least Barbara, expounded the great achievement of being at Napier Girls High for 20 years and how much she really loves her job-Monday mornings are like heaven for her as she goes off to work to her 'fun' place.Five generations of Barbara's family have attended Girls High-what a great achievement to be proud of and extremely well put across by Barbara including a saying appropriate to her topic!
The Judges had a job to do and selected Barbara as the winner and she will represent us at the Area Council Day on 26th September with aplomb. Mike was second and Laurence was third.
The meeting concluded with the 'other' three members present answering the same topic, which they did well, but of course had some prior warning!
Reminder; Executive meeting Friday 5th September 5.15pm at the usual venue and if you have forgotten get those subs to David a.s.a.p.
See you all again next week.
