"Appraise with praise" from the Speeches by Management series was the direction taken by Jane at yesterday's meeting of Pania Toastmasters Club. Jane had 'George' alias Russell being a role model to emphasis the point. It certainly helped to reinforce the message. Well done Jane and let's not forget 'George'.
Ian, who evaluated Jane's speech said that he had some difficulty hearing her due to background noise. I applaud Ian's honesty and while it may have been a little late for such a statement, it is the sort of thing that can happen and speakers need to be aware of it. Good that our General Evaluator, Darryl gave some helpful advice when it came to his turn in the programme.
David did a sterling job as Toastmaster, there were a number of last minute changes all of which were handled very competently, David's experience showed- well done! an excellent example that others could learn from.
Graeme gave an Educational on the International Speech Contest at our next meeting, it was pleasing to see the audience ask questions along the way. Five members have signified their intention to take part on 20th February-Excellent result! Graeme encouraged those not able to enter the Contest to come along and help in other ways, such as Timekeepers or just part of the audience.
Our Table Topics Master was 'George' (oops) that should be Russell, he gave some thought provoking questions relating to the Napier City Council. David was asked "should the Council be involved in financing Art Deco?' He spoke about the nostalgia associated with the 1930's and suggested we make the most of wining and dining while it lasts!
"Should the council be promoting events sporting and cultural?" was Laurence topic and he felt that they needed to get their own responsibilities in order before taking on other activities, Wow!
Cheryl responded to "Should the Onekawa Swimming Complex be leased out to other interests?" She started off rather carefully but ended up in full cry with lots of ideas and enthusiasm.
"Should the Council sell the Municipal and Century Theatres?" Wendy was a little unsure to begin with but after due consideration gave a BIG YES to the proposal. A good topics session-thanks Russell and thanks to those who participated.
Laurence evaluated Table Topics, giving helpful advice to everyone. A well balance coverage and we appreciate your feedback, Laurence.
Sue gave her Timekeeper's report, showing she had concentrated on the task in hand, she created lots of laughter when giving times on those taking part in Table Topics, they were either, "one minute -slightly plus or one minute- slightly minus".
Darryl was given very little time in which to give his General Evaluation, which was rather unfortunate, especially with it being his first time, however he gave an incisive report covering all salient points and finished on time! Most impressive , Darryl, which clearly shows your understanding on what is a very demanding role.
A most enjoyable meeting-Congratulations everyone!
Best Speaker - Jane: Best Evaluator- Laurence: Best Table Topic- Wendy.
Thanks to Graeme for this report.
