"AUTISM & HISTORY"

These were the subjects of our two Prepared speeches at Pania's meeting on 23rd July, an interesting and varied program well controlled by the Toastmaster of the day , Darryl, who produced an excellent program that showed he shared his birthday with some 'other' well known people i.e. Amelia Earhart,Bindi Irwin, Anna Paquin and Alexandre Dumas. Is he not in great company?

The meeting opened with a speech from Laurence entitled "An Increase in Autism", which gave some very interesting facts about this illness and how it would appear to be on the increase.Laurence quoted many worthwhile statistics to prove his point and as he works with people who suffer from Autism he is able to speak with some authority. Laurence certainly achieved the objectives of the assignment which was from one of the 15 Advanced Manuals and his evaluator Craig felt that he covered the material  extremely well, used plenty of gestures, knew his subject and was even able to incorporate some humour. Craig did have a couple of suggestions for him regarding possible improvement to take on board.

Next up was Barbara with an Advanced Speech "Bringing History to Life", during which she shared with us some very interesting facts and figures about the history of Napier Girls High School, where she has worked for many years, and prior to that had attended the school as a pupil as did her mother and sister. Barbara always comes up with well presented speeches and with a subject like Girls High, which is steeped in history and tradition, and the source of much historical material, this presentation was no different.Unfortunately Barbara had so much interesting information to impart the time allocated did not do her justice, but what she was able to get across certainly showed why they consider the school one big family! David evaluated Barbara's speech and gave her plenty of well earned commendations plus a suggestion or two for improvement.

Due to slightly longer speeches we had no time for Table Topics this week, much to the members disappointment! and Graeme our 'was to be' Table Topics master.

Cheryl gave an excellent and full general Evaluation with commendations and recommendations for most who spoke and was assisted by the Timekeeper Linda, who kept us 'ticking' along nicely, to finish on time!

Excellent meeting, smallish attendance but thoroughly enjoyable.Well done everyone!

Best Speaker; Barbara
Best Evaluator;Craig.

Due to a slight breakdown in communication, this report is written on Tuesday, based on memory, so  any errors or omissions are regretted but hopefully accepted.
