"Face Your Fears..."

...and do it anyway.  This was the title of Barbara's speech today. We know she doesn't like flying - add enclosed places and earthquakes and you have the heart of her speech. She had to take a lift to the 17th floor, in Wellington where the conference was held.  She'd travelled by plane too so they (the fears) all came at once. And she dealt with them.  Well done, Barbara.  Hey, there were no earthquakes!! "Just the procedure if in the event...." Ian evaluated the speech and had commendations and a suggestion or two for another time.
For her effort, General Evaluator Graeme, awarded her Best Speaker.

Graeme was also Toastmaster so he was very busy during the meeting. He led the meeting well, from prompt start to two-minutes-early finish.

Our latest member, from Napier Club, is David Grant, and his Icebreaker speech was entitled "Confessions of a Serial Toastmaster".  David has previously been a member of three Toastmaster Clubs, before transferring to Pania. Almost a true confessions! Welcome to Pania, David.  He was introduced and evaluated by Mike, who, while commending the skills honed over the last thirty-two years, commented that he would have liked to have heard more about David, outside of his Toastmaster's life.  In future speeches?
Mike was awarded Best Evaluator for his evaluation of David's speech.

Jen was Table Topics Master with a difference.  She gave each participant an item and asked, "why should we, as shareholders of General Foods,  purchase this item."
Sue was given lavender-scented glade gel. We heard how wonderful lavender was, and why we should  buy it for ourselves.
Mike had Hansell's gravy browning and raved about it's wonderful properties, not least being made 'in pristine fields'. Gravy browning?
Isaac was handed a pot of home made beeswax, and immediately got us all on his side by admitting that he had no idea what it was or what it might be used for. A truthful salesman! He chose to publicise the manufacturer, saying they had a very good name so their beeswax must be good.
Ian was given a tiny potato masher, and described it intimately.  He couldn't read the bar code though, and decided that it was for mashing peas, not potatoes. Very funny.
David's article was a travelling lipstick holder. (Don't think he realised it was to hold a lippy!) He slipped into talking about women's handbags, where said lippy might be found.  He personally never goes near a woman's handbag.  (We believe you, David.)
Darryl evaluated Table Topics vey efficiently, having commendations and a recommendation for each speaker, not an easy task.  He chose Ian's as the Best table Topic.

General business was covered with known duties allocated for 19th September. A reminder was given re subs now due, and Area D2 Council day(evening) on Friday 20th September. Barbara is our representative in both Table Topics and Humorous speech contests and to support her, you are invited to join together at Breakers Hastings 131 Heretaunga Street East, 5-45ish.  This may be a for a quick meal, or coffee, or just to chat, before attending the Council meeting and contests which commence at 6.30.  The Council meeting will be held in Wesley Lounge, Hastings Street, directly opposite the HB Opera House.  The two venues are within walking distance.

Graeme awarded Barbara her Winner's certificate for the Humorous contest, and Jen received a participation certificate,
Graeme was not in the peak of health today but managed to carry out all his duties.  He had suggestions for both speech evaluators, and complemented Jen on her presentation of Table Topics.

Well done, everyone who attended a Pania meeting, well up to the usual high standard.
