Thursday, 22nd February Pania Toastmasters held there Contest night at Greenmeadows Community Centre with the Evaluation and International Prepared Speech contests held in front of an enthusiastic audience from Pania & Napier Toastmasters Club.
First up was the Evaluation Contest, where contestants take turns at evaluating a Test Speech given by another member. Evaluation is a vital part of Toastmasters and it is how we improve our speaking skills. Tonight the Test Speaker was Craig with a speech entitled "The Patrol" in which he explained about the history of Napier Community Patrol, what the patrollers do to assist a safer community and how we can help. The Evaluators who took turns at presenting their evaluations, coming into the room in their drawn spot, were Carol, Mike, David & Marc and Craig had provided ample material for them to all make worthwhile suggestions for improvement, while also giving Craig praise for the interesting presentation.
With only four contestants , only two placings were announced and the runner-up was Mike, while the winning Evaluation was from Marc.
Following a supper of wine, cheese and other goodies we had the Speech Contest. Disappointingly only three members entered the contest, and for one of these, Marc, it was an impromptu decision (he even changed his mind on his subject during the Contestant's briefing!). However three worthwhile speeches were presented by Mike, Marc & David with the winning speech being presented by Mike with a speech entitled "The Ant & The Elephant". A marvelous adaptation of an Aesop's fable, but with some major changes in characters and the outcome. Mike presented it in brilliant style, with characterisations and booming voice, and it even had a message for bullys!!
Congratulations to Marc & Mike, who will now go on to represent Pania Club at the Area Council Day on 16th March, where they will meet the winners of the other Clubs in Area D2. Be there to support them, they will be hard to beat!!
Many thanks to the members of Napier Club who came along to support our Contest night and act as Chairmen and Judges, Steve, Ian, Amy, Christine,Daniel and Layeeq and past Pania member Kerry.
Special thanks to Graeme & Christine for Chairing the Contests.
An excellent night, next time Pania members make the effort to support these occasions if you possibly can! Next week back to 12.05pm meeting time Thursday 1st March with Toastmaster, Patrick.
