Anna was our lovely toastmaster this week and started our
meeting on time having provided all participants with a well laid out agenda.
Helen read our mission statement with great eye contact.
Marc introduced Craig with his usual thorough research – this
being Craig’s 10th time he had completed his manual – that’s
dedication.
Craig’s speech – 'You can do it" – was aptly named as he told
us that one of the main purposes of Toastmasters was to become great evaluators
and learn how to give good feedback and by the way – we have an evaluation
contest coming up in two weeks time! Craig gave us an outline of what would
happen at the evaluation contest and he reiterated that anybody can participate
in the evaluation contest. You can do it. It’s all about learning from the
speaker right through to the evaluation and the contest chair. He encouraged
the club members to take a copy of forms needed to participate in the evaluation
contest. 30 days or 30 years – you can be a winner and you can do it. Marc’s
evaluation of Craig covered his speed of speech and vocal variety and lack of
notes used.
Anna then applauded Craig and mentioned to the club that it
was a great example of the power of persuasion. She then went on to introduce
Ian Wright – Area Director who later presented Laurel Francis with her cup for
her wonderful skills as Table Topics Winner, Pania Contest, Area Contest and
Division contest – well done Laurel!
Noel introduced Russell and read out the objectives of his
technical speech from his manual Speeches by Management. Russell preceded to
explain to his collective of shareholders the reason for the meeting was to
advise an offer for take-over of their company by ABC Limited. He advised that
he would be rejecting this offer and explained why on the grounds that they are
set to do well by doing nothing – a valid point. So hence – there was no need
to sell at this stage. He listed out the outcomes both for and against but
stuck with his reasoning not to sell to ABC Limited. Noel gave a well-rounded
evaluation of Russell and highlighted the objectives and Russell’s attainment of
these.
Stephanie provided us with yet another thrilling and
enjoyable table topics session. As we would all be going on a trip to Mars
shortly, Stephanie would be providing us with various items we would need to
take on our journey. We were to highlight the benefits of these items and
discuss them. Jen was first up and told us all about her Mars Pills for food
poisoning – in particular they were very good for flatulence and even more handy
should the “dogs start barking” in space. Barbara told us all about her PVC
glue that kept her feet firmly planted on the ground and Linda had an Australian
Gecko as her pet and told us all about the advantages of taking a gecko over
taking a dog to mars. Marc advised that having a loofa would keep him very
clean in all circumstances given that (as Linda had highlighted) the small
spaces on the journey to mars would mean smells could be a problem including
such smells left by doggie doos on the bottom of the foot!
Carol summed the meeting up extremely well as General Evaluator and was assisted by the Timekeeper Petrice.
Overall a very enjoyable and fun meeting.
Best Evaluator – Noel
Best Speech – Craig
Best Table Topic - Linda
