Pania's meeting today involved the Table Topics Contest and this was hotly contested by five members under the Chairmanship of Helen.
We had four visitors, Rebecca,Sandy, Tricia and Jennifer (plus the dog Esther) and also Chris and Ian from Napier Club, but a lot of apologies!
Table Topics in this contest means that each speaker answers the same topic (obviously the speakers leave the room until it is their turn to speak) for between 1min and 2 mins. Helen showed good skills in Chairing the contest and the Topic she chose was "Your friend says that you are behaving like you are having a mid-life crisis, she offered a remedy, tell us what that was and how it cured you!!"
Craig was first up and spoke about not knowing what this was, if he had ever had one! but a complete change of scenery might remedy the situation including an extended overseas trip and no more Toastmasters!!
Carol was next and her remedy was threefold 1. More sleep, preferably in Fiji: 2. More healthy intake of food(minerals etc) and 3. Ditch the husband and kids!!!
Patrick need to 'find himself again' and felt that grey hairs were the first sign of the problem. A long camping trip in the country would work wonders.
Barbara, had the complete remedy with a weekend in Taupo with hubby and two other couples, Test match on TV for the guys,a ridiculous outfit from the op-shop for the girls, a great meal and a Quiz.
Laurel felt that this topic was made for her, she has the remedy now after leaving Auckland (and the rat-race) behind for the calmness of the Bay and time to concentrate on her priorities like painting, gardening and a long life.
The WINNER was; LAUREL, 2nd BARBARA, 3rd CAROL
With time up our sleeve, Helen ran an impromptu Table Topics session for the rest of the audience, Linda "An ideal river cruise" (swamps!!);Jen "Best Movie" (don't know that she actually spoke about a movie!): Chris "Painting and decorating a Bedroom" (mirror on the ceiling!!): Wendy "Moving into a New House" (Real Estate Agent 38 years in the one house!): Sandy "favorite Movie"; Jennifer "Your Mobile Home" (travelling the country with Esther the dog); David "Favorite Friday Night" (Home Brew); Graeme "What he likes about Toastmasters" (must be something, he has been a member for 40 years); Tricia "What you like about your job" and Ian "Life Ahead after HDC and Area Director" (perhaps he should have been in the contest with a mid-life crisis?)
Well done everyone and Helen for the quick thinking topics!
Business session included a "Spirit of Success" certificate for Patrick (5 speeches from the Competent Communicator Manual) and the engraved Trophies for the Humorous Speech Contest to Barbara and Toastmaster of the Year to Helen.
An excellent meeting, where everyone (including the guests-which is not compulsory) had the opportunity to speak.
Let's all support Barbara and Laurel at the Area Meeting on 2nd September, Greenmeadows Community Centre 7.00pm.
Until next week when the Toastmaster is Kerry it's "Goodnight from him"
