Meeting 11 August
After last week's meeting could
we be as good? Yes we can! Another great meeting with positive vibes crackling
through the room.
Darryl was in the Chair and the
current Rio Olympics was his theme. Consequently his segues were interesting
facts about new olympic sports, numbers of athletes attending, etc. And he gave
us a pretty picture of Rio on the programme. The meeting started one minute
early and finished just before 1pm. Well done Darryl.
In fact “well done” is what
could be said about the entire meeting. Lately the standards have been so high
it must appear formidable to prospective members. It is even scaring me, your
gentle recorder.
Patrick delivered the Mission
Statement with enthusiasm and the Business Session followed. Craig presented
awards for the Humorous Speech Contest (see “A Funny thing happened...”) and
also a Silver AC to Russell. He then gave a quick education session on the
forthcoming Table Topics Contest.
We then had two very good
speeches from Laurel and Kerry. Both were introducing themselves to members of
our Club.
Laurel's speech entitled
“Payback” opened with a Maori saying ,translated as What is the greatest thing
in the world? "It is people, it is people,it is people". She then related how her time with
Toastmasters had lead to NZ District Governor and an interesting Career in
Coaching in NZ and overseas. She concluded by reading from an email from a
member thanking her for her encouragement which had enabled them to succeed. She
encouraged members to give something back to their community.
Kerry's speech also had a
Toastmaster aspect describing how she had joined to improve her work place
presentation skills and before she knew it she was an officer and then Area
Governor! Her speech title was “Ask a busy person” and she related how a Psychic
had warned her that she was too busy and would pay for it with a health event.
She has not payed attention to this warning. She has too much to do!
For something different in
Table Topics Barbara ran a quiz so that newer members learned a bit about the
Club. Old dog David got 8 correct and took home the chocolate! Delish.
The evaluations kept up to the
same high standard as the speeches even though they struggled to find something
to recommend. Linda found much about Laurel's delivery to commend and even
showed that she too has been learning Maori. Ka pai? Craig did suggest that
Kerry's opening would have had more impact if she had opened with her story of
the psychic.
Helen evaluated Table Topics
commending how Barbara had explained and run her quiz. And, in an hour of
quotable sayings Helen's was “Table Topics shows you how to think on your feet
not on your seats”.
General Evaluator David found
much to praise and nothing on which to demur. Timekeeper Jane.Guests were Viv,
Allyson and Shane.
Best Speaker, Laurel
Best Evaluator, Linda
It really was a coin toss. So
much positiveness in 50 minutes.
And thanks again to the elves
who set up and clear the meeting room, Graeme and Ian
