Another great meeting of Pania Toastmaster's today capably overseen by Toastmaster of the day Jane, who had a well constructed programme that allowed everyone to speak and to finish on time.
The two prepared speeches were quite different in content but both were of great interest to the members and generally well delivered. First up was Linda with her ninth speech from the Competent Communicator Manual 'Persuade with Power' entitled appropriately "The Power of Resolution". This was a very competently put together and delivered speech by Linda all about making resolutions and being able to see them through to success! With her background in Psychology Linda gave an excellent five point plan for getting those New Year resolutions completed. So picture the result, train the sub-conscious mind to the end picture, utilise your will power, regularly check progress and discuss goal and regular checks with friends/family. Well done Linda, I am sure that many in the audience (even Laurence) will be able to better achieve results in their chosen resolutions in 2016.
Linda's presentation was introduced and evaluated by Graeme. He had ample opportunity for commendations in this speech and those were easy to select. Even though it was an excellent speech though, Graeme with his experience, was able to suggest a couple of improvements for Linda, one in particular being to utilise a chart with bullet points of the five steps mentioned to enable better recollection by the audience. A very well constructed evaluation, Graeme, one that all the members could benefit from.
The second speech was presented by Russell. A very interesting topic about our proposed water exports from the Hawkes Bay which fitted into the Advanced Manual Speech 'A Fact Finding Report' and was entitled "Water Exports". Russell had obviously done some comprehensive research into this subject and highlited some excellent points particularly does anyone know what effect this will have on the aquifers in the future? Florida ended up with large sinkholes engulfing houses etc-could this happen here? Very thought provoking Russell.
David introduced and evaluated Russell and gave him due commendations plus a couple of suggestions particularly that maybe if he had set out at the beginning of his speech where he was going it could have been more easily followed by the members, also Russell was rather tied to his notes and perhaps could project his voice a little more. Thoughtful evaluation David, but it ended rather abruptly!
Table Topics were presented by Laurence and he had memories on his mind hence the theme of remembering. Darryl had to explain lame excuses for being late to a meeting, Helen, why men are so capable at forgetting wedding anniversaries and Carol why, when Politicians are elected they seem to forget about the promises they made when canvassing for votes. All answered well with appropriate humour and relevant memories.
Ian evaluated Table Topics with his usual dry sense of humour that brought several sniggers from the audience and had some good feedback for the speakers.
Timekeeper Helen gave us the times and kept us to time ( a great effort with a fairly full program) and Craig summed up the meeting as General Evaluator, with comments for all the evaluators, plus some suggestions and also for the Toastmaster.
During the business session Certificates were handed out for the Evaluation Contest held on 12th November, next week's program was discussed, members were asked to bring along any old (within the last 18 months) Toastmaster Magazines they may have for a Marketing Campaign in the New Year, and Helen and David were congratulated for assisting Napier Club with their Evaluation Contest last Monday.
