“Hello World” was the speech that kicked off our last
meeting. Darryl told us about some challenging times he was trying to speak
different languages around the world. He found the French were intolerant of
foreign speakers, and once a French chef made him repeat his order correctly
three times before he could get his food! A good choice of topic for a speech
from the Humorously Speaking advanced manual.
David was the next speaker, introduced by Jane. His
persuasive speech aimed to encourage us to take up a hobby for the new year. As
hobbies are supposed to be fun, he was hoping we wouldn’t need too much
persuasion!
A quick and efficiently run business session was followed by
Table Topics, led by Helen. Russell spoke about his first job as a “seagull”,
which we learnt was a casual worker on the wharf and said since then he has
never been paid so much for doing so little! Iain used the same topic to tell us
how his first job – where he worked harder than everyone else, or so he told us!
-- sparked an interest in wage rates and unions. Laurence and Graeme both spoke
about their surnames, and both somehow managed to turn the subject to women and
romance. This was noted by the Table Topics evaluator, Carol!
Noel gave a thoughtful General Evaluation and awarded Best
Speaker to Darryl, and Best Evaluator to Barbara, who evaluated him. Best Table
Topic was awarded to Russell.
Next meeting is the final meeting for the year. Remember to
bring a small, unwrapped gift that we can talk about in Table Topics, before
they are donated to the Christmas Cheer appeal.
Laurence
