Pania held their Evaluation Contest today and an extremely interesting and very well presented speech by Napier Toastmaster, Karen entitled "Our Companion-Concussion" was the 'test speech' for the Evaluators to work on.
In addition to Karen we also played host to Jane and Brenda from Napier Club, who both assisted with our Contest.Many thanks to the three of you for your assistance.
The Contest was chaired by Craig and Karen's speech included a personal story regarding Peter (her husband) being knocked out when attempting to catch a six(when part of the crowd) at the Boxing Day Cricket Test in Melbourne . (this is always a real highlite on the Australian Cricket Calendar and hosts crowds of 50/60 thousand) Peter unfortunately suffered from concussion after the incident and took some considerable time to fully recover (he also dropped the ball!!)
Karen, ended up lying on her back in front of the audience and still gesticulating and speaking to us.
She presented an excellent speech, with great gestures, body language and also plenty of humour, which helped to lift what is a very serious subject.
Many facts and figures were presented which shows what the cost of concussion (mainly in sport) is to the country every year.
Even though it was an excellent speech our four contestants in the Evaluation Contest,(Marc, Anna, Paula & Patrick) were each able to give Karen some very worthwhile suggestions for improvement.
It was great to see Paula and Patrick enter the contest for the first time and I am sure that will both gain a lot from the experience.
Being a contest there has to be an overall winner, although all the contestants were winners!!
First place went to Marc, second was Anna and Paula was third. In the wind up probably the experience of Marc and Anna enabled the result as above.
Marc now goes on to represent the Club at the Area Contest on 19th March at Greenmeadows Community Centre, Tait Drive. That night we will also be having the Area R3 final of the International Speech Contest and Pania's contest will be held on 14th March. Get your speech ready now!!
Next meeting is 7th March and I believe the Toastmaster is Heather.
