Believe it or not that was one of the messages we received from Pania Toastmaster's meeting on Thursday 5th February! two excellent prepared speeches told us about the benefits of 30 minutes walking daily and how to curb our anger (if you find that necessary).
David was the Toastmaster of the day and ran an efficient program, which, while we went a little overtime, was not his doing. He connected the various items well and made everyone feel at ease.Jeanette read the Mission Statement of the Club and Graeme the General Evaluator explained his role assisted by Timekeeper Ian. Thanks for stepping in at short notice , Graeme.
Carol was our first speaker and her title was 'Boiling Point', all about anger and things we can do to assist curbing it in ourselves.A very informative presentation which was a 'Get Comfortable with Visual Aids' assignment from the Competent Communicator Manual. Carol spoke enthusiastically and utilised the visuals that she had well, these included a police truncheon and an imitation pistol, which also brought several Clint Eastwood quotes into her speech.. Well done Carol for your knowledge and enthusiasm displayed and off course the ideas for curbing one's anger, which included going for a walk to calm down.
Darryl evaluated Carol's presentation and and commended her on the structure and the use of the visuals, also the excellent start and summary Carol had.The recommendations he gave her will be useful for her next assignment.
Next up was Cheryl with a speech entitled 'Just Put One Foot in Front of the Other', this was from the CC Manual Assignment Nine "Persuade with Power". Again an excellent and informative presentation that was all about the value of 30 minutes walking every day and the many many many good aspects that it has for your health (and anger).Cheryl spoke very enthusiastically about the subject with little use of notes and really made us all feel rather sedentary in our daily activities. Great information shared and some well worth taking on board, I am sure most of us try but do we try hard enough?
Craig evaluated Cheryl's speech and along with many appropriate commendations suggested that she slow down a little with her speech rate (she was overly enthusiastic) and also perhaps a Visual with bullet points of the many benefits would have assisted retention.
Table Topics session was led by Jen and the participants had apparently joined her in a walk along the beach over the past few days and had to recount experiences that they came across. Mike's dog "excreted on the path" and he did not clean it up, Mike was his usual confident self and spoke well to the topic (we will not go into what he said!). Darryl came across some 'freedom campers' who left a mess- seems he does not mind them per se , but gave a very clear answer with his view on them.
Jeanette "had kids playing in the fountain and water features" not always with the cleanest of intentions- good answer that ended up with the fact that it was a hot day, she jumped in as well!
Ian was shocked to come across some "nude sunbathers" after getting closer to take a look, once again a very politic answer from Ian, not sure that it was relevant to the question, but who really cares??
Helen evaluated Table Topics and was able to generally find commendations for all and some recommendations as well- Helen is a definite asset to our Club.
Due to time constraints Graeme's General Evaluation was curtailed but he was still able to give some worthwhile feedback to the Evaluators and Ian completed his Timekeeper's report.
An excellent meeting, well attended and great to have our newest member, Linda inducted during the business session- welcome Linda and we look forward to your Ice Breaker (next week I understand!)
The awards went to; Table Topics; Mike / Speaker;Cheryl / and Evaluator; Darryl.
Following the meeting several of us looked at a possible new venue- looks very promising and more will be advised after the next Executive meeting.
Don't forget Subs are due next month.
Regards,Craig
