What an excellent meeting Pania had yesterday will run by Jen, our Toastmaster of the day, with a full and interesting programme based around the Chinese lucky number of EIGHT( it was the 8th of the 8th). Jen even arranged a lucky number raffle (no money required) and the winner enjoyed(in fact shared with us all) a box of chocolates. Mmmm......
12 members attended and our guest from last week Isaac, it was a very warm winter's day and this kept the mood of the meeting warm and convivial. We started off with a Speech from our latest member, Graham, he is to make a presentation in Sydney next week on behalf of his employer Opus and was utilising the opportunity to put some of it into practice. His presentation is to be a Power Point one and for 20/30 minutes, so the time did not allow him to cover it fully within the Club. Utilising the Organise Your Speech project he gave a very interesting presentation on the disposal of waste from stock trucks on our roads, something apparently they do not care about in Oz. I am sure that every driver has at some stage in the past, been 'sprayed' with animal excrement when following or passing a stock truck! but does it happen so often now? NO because the carriers are being responsible drivers. But not in Oz!Graham utilised photos rather than power point to enhance is message and this worked well. Well done Graham and all the best for your presentation next week.
Utilising TM to practise work presentations is an excellent way to get 'informed' feedback to assist with the real thing. Graham was awarded the Best Speaker trophy.
Our second speech was presented by Darryl, who was using the Visual Aids project with a presentation entitled "Smile for the Camera". This was again an excellent speech and very educational for the amateur and not-so-amateur photographer. Darryl is a long term member of the local Camera Club and knows this subject well so was able to present to us utilising his camera, some charts and some photos, material that was well accepted by the members and informative. Darryl showed the experience of his almost 12 months as a member and already up to Project 8(lucky for some!) and handled the visuals with ease and comfort. Congratulations Darryl on achieving the objectives of yet another assignment.
The Speeches were introduced and evaluated by Barbara and Craig respectively and both achieved their roles with aplomb! Barbara had some good feedback for Graham to think about before next week's presentation and many commendations. Craig commended Darryl on his use of the Visuals and recommended that he watch the size, depending on the area of the room and utilise a little more Vocal Variety. For this he was awarded the Best Evaluator.
Table Topics, is always fun, and our TT Master Noel continued with that ideal. His subjects were all about eating (appropriate for the 8th of then 8th- members spoke about what they ate(eight)).Wendy was first up with her "Most Unusual Meal" , like me, she is not very adventurous when it comes to new foods and prefers something plain- Pasta was her 'different ' meal! Isaac had the "Most memorial Meal" and that was as a 10 year old, he remembers his mother's Sunday Roasts-made us all hungry- I think! Sue had her "Strangest Location Meal", on a beach, howling wind and gritty sandwiches- brings back memories to most! and finally Jan spoke about her worst meal (no- not one that I cooked). but an occasion when she had to go out and eat to be polite, but lost it all shortly after!-what a waste!. Wendy was awarded "Best Table Topics" speaker of the day.
The meeting was well evaluated overall by Jan (who was not at her healthiest best!!) and she reminded us of the time constraints on Pania meetings (50 minutes only), while Cheryl had done her best to keep us to time as Timekeeper, but some just never learn!! and we finished a couple of minutes after 1.00pm.
In the business session a Statement of Income & Expenditure was presented by Treasurer Craig, and this showed a reasonable surplus for the year's activities. Copies are available for members if required. Craig( as President) reminded the Toastmaster of the day, that if they wanted to put a bit of life into their meeting, they can try something different ( i.e. a theme, funny hats, quotes etc) and some ideas will be in the next Newsletter. Well done Jen for doing this at this meeting. Remember tho. 50 minutes max.!!!!
Next meeting is the Table Topics Contest- EVERYONE should give this a go- great experience , just look upon it as a normal Table Topic during a meeting. Time 1min (minimum) 2 minutes (max).
I will be the audience!!
