Two very intriguing speeches at Thursday 19th March's meeting of Pania Toastmasters were overseen by our Toastmaster of the day Darryl, who kept the meeting running along nicely with a very full program to complete. The speech titles of "A Walk a Day Keeps Madness Away" and " Feel The Fear and Speak" made for an excellent meeting attended by 13 members.
First up was one of our newer members Linda, introduced and evaluated by Mike, Linda's speech was from the Competent Communicator Manual, Speech 2, Organise your Speech and her title was "A Walk a Day Keeps Madness Away".This was an excellent and educational presentation that followed on well from s speech a couple of meetings ago by Cheryl.Exercise not only assist your physical well being but also your mental health! Linda is involved in the psychology area and knows what she is talking about. Therefore medium to strong physical activity can assist your mental well being in three areas 1. getting a 'runners high' 2.increasing seratonin! levels and 3. assisting the BDNF (brain deprived neurotrofic factor!). Linda covered the areas extremely well and certainly gave us food for thought regarding exercise and increased mental awareness in later life. Well done Linda, for your second speech it was well organised with opening, body and conclusion and extremely interesting. I even took the hint and went for a run that afternoon!
Mike's evaluation praised Linda for her material and had an excellent suggestion for improvement in that she could have told us what her qualifications were to speak about this topic-no doubt about them but we needed to be informed that she did know what she was talking about.Mike also felt that her opening and closure could have been a little stronger. Well done Mike.
Next up was Cheryl, who was completing her 10th speech from the CC manual 'Inspire Your Audience' with a speech entitled "feel The Fear and Speak".We were a group of EIT students and Cheryl was convincing us that Toastmasters were great for everyone who wants to progress in their chosen field. This lady would be a tremendous advertisement for what Toastmasters can do for a person, and the improvement she has shown over her two years with us, was certainly accentuated by this presentation. Excellent introduction, great enthusiasm, no notes, many anecdotes and quotes used to inspire us-and she certainly did, very well done Cheryl and you proved that you certainly are now a "Competent Toastmaster" congratulations.
Wendy evaluated Cheryl's presentation and gave her a big tick for each of the objectives in the Manual, she confirmed that Cheryl has many of the required speaking skills and suggested that she just slow down her speech rate slightly (I think the enthusiasm was showing too much).Good evaluation Wendy.
Two speakers than had a chance for Table Topics, Jen & Helen and the Topic Master, Barbara chose colours to speak about, both acquitted themselves admirably. This was evaluated by Helen!! who gave both speakers suitable praise!!
Grammarian, Carol covered her word of the day "foible" which was used several times and the Timekeeper Ian advised us of the speaking times. Craig completed the day with a brief General Evaluation, with the main recommendation being that the Table Topic Master not pick the Evaluator for a Table Topic.Meeting concluded a couple of minutes late.
This was our second to last meeting at this venue, from 2nd April we are at the Blind Foundation Rooms, 65 Thackeray Street,(free parking) see you there!
Quotes from Cheryl's speech "when you speak you have three speeches-one you prepare-one you practice- and the one you present" and "people would rather be in the coffin than give a eulogy at at funeral" !!!!
