The Silent Language of a Hairy Tale

Well, the heavens had opened for over 24 hours, but the sun came out about 1 hour before our meeting today and this allowed 13 members and a guest to enjoy an excellent fare and not get wet getting in and out!

The meeting was well organised and run by our Toastmaster Ian, who managed to get everything done without his assistant Graeme (who was an apology-I cannot remember the last time Graeme missed a Pania meeting!!). The program was a full one with two speakers and Table Topics plus the usual Evaluations. Our guest, Rachel was welcomed and well informed about what was happening as the meeting progressed.

The first prepared speech (A Hairy Tale) was presented by Cheryl, and what an entertaining tale (tail) it was. The Vocal Variety speech from the CC manual, covered the objectives, and the speech led particularly well to this assignment. Cheryl related a story from her childhood when a stray dog made its home at their place, Scotty was it given name and apparently it ruled the roost in the street creating some exciting and humorous tales (tails) for Cheryl to share with us, which she did with excellent vocal variety and enthusiasm, without the use of notes. An excellent presentation Cheryl.

Our next speech was also extremely well delivered by Sue McMullan, Body Language was her goal and she achieved this with great aplomb with her speech entitled "The Silent Language". Sue utilised her background in Singing and Acting training to relate the "dos" and "don't dos" when speaking, with concentration on gestures and body language she glided around the stage like a 20 year old! It was well put together and also very educational for all members present. An excellent Speech Sue, you have still got it!

The speeches were evaluated by Darryl (Cheryl's speech) and Jen (Sue's presentation), both were helpful for the speaker and certainly full of well deserved commendations. It was Darryl's first and he had obviously done his homework, next time he is going to look at the third person approach in his evaluation. Jen had great comments for Sue and suggested getting rid of the notes, unfortunately some of us still need them!

Mike then ran the Table Topics session, the speakers had to pretend they were an "Agony Aunt" (Aunt Betty) and respond to people who had written in with their 'personal' problems. Viv was up first and she made an excellent fist of answering "Worried from Whanganui's" problem of only "making love" while Micheal Laws was on the radio!! Laurence's answer to "Discerned of Dargaville" was 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' with the husband that was a real outdoors type and even when home preferred to sleep in a tent in the backyard!! Wendy told "Ambitious of Ashburton" to keep filing rather than take the promotion offered by the amorous boss!

Jan evaluated Table Topics with her usual efficiency with some excellent comments for Mike about keeping the topics as short as possible and for all of the speakers.

The General Evaluation was completed in record time by Craig, as time was running short, through no fault of our Timekeeper Barbara, who did her best to keep us within the 50 mins. We actually started 2 mins late (tut-tut) and consequently finished 2 mins late (again tut-tut)
It's all fast and furious at Pania meetings, but a great way to spend your lunch hour, see you all again next week and we will do it all once more!
