An excellent meeting was held today under the Leadership of Craig (not that he did much!) when we held our International Speech Contest. Graeme organised the agenda and the Contestants, of which there were four and all spoke well on their various and wide ranging topics.
First up was Barbara, with “Global Connection”, this was a very enlightening tale about her latest addition ( a cell phone-can’t remember the exact model- but apart from cooking tea-it does everything and while only two months old (she ordered it for Xmas) is now out of date!. An example to us non-techno phobics of the advantages of such a phone.
The second speaker was Laurence with a hastily prepared presentation entitled ‘One Small Piece”. This involved being more conscious of your community and the environments, even if it is Maraenui and taking a pride in where you live, well presented and had a good theme, considering the last minute (literally) preparation.
Next up was Russell, with “Racing with Ghost”, this was an amusing account of Russell’s sailing days of Timaru with his two person yatch and the antics they and it got up to, very interesting and presented another side to Russell we hade not seen before, unfortunately the yatch and Russell ended up rather unceremoniously dumped on the beach!
Finally Jane presented a speech entitled “Wake Up Napier”, encouraging us to realise what we have in this City and region and making the most of it, a well put together presentation that was designed to Inspire us.
All speeches were evaluated as Manual assignments, so that was a plus for the Contest and the speakers.
Brenda kept us well to time and even had time to answer a Table Topic along with Darryl. Mike shared with us the wonderful exploits of his son Jason, who in the past few days has completed the tremendous feat of crossing the Cook Straight (from North to South) and not on a ferry, in a plane or even a boat but swimming all the way. Congratulations to Jason , Mike has a right to feel proud of him.
The Contest placings; Well the runner up was Laurence and the Winner was Barbara, who will now represent the Club in both the Evaluation and International Speech Contests at the Area Council meeting on Friday 15th March, commencing at 7.00pm in the Hastings Baptist Church Lounge, Lyndon Road, Hastings. Come along and support her!!
Have a great meeting next week, any volunteers to get out a meeting report?? Jan & I are away.
